The death of Kris Kristofferson Saturday at 88 triggered a tribute that included five of his songs sung by himself, and five song by others, as well as collaborations with Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson in The Highwaymen and with Rosanne Cash and Elvis Costello in a songwriting project.
Birthdays were noted for Cissy Houston, turning 91; Johnny Mathis (89), Marilyn McCoo (81), Sylvia Peterson of The Shiffons (78), John Lombardo of 10,000 Maniacs (72), Patrice Rushen (70), Gibby Haynes of Butthole Surfers (67) , country’s Marty Stuart (66) and Phish phrontman Trey Anastasio (60).
There was a longer segment honoring Marc Bolan of T. Rex (born this day in 1947), and we saluted Buffalo Springfield drummer Dewey Martin (1940), Frankie Lymon of the Teenagers (1942), jazz drummer Buddy Rich (1917) and producer Gus Dudgeon (1942).
There was time, finally to wallow in the final day of September in song, from Big Star to Kurt Weill and Green Day. And at the end, a nod to Jimmy Carter on the eve of his 100th birthday.
