The one-two punch of Sly Stone’s death last week followed by that of Brian Wilson led to a packed double tribute this week for both of them. For Wilson it meant the whole of “Pet Sounds” surrounded by what led up to it and what followed. As much as we played, there was much more that was left out.
The Sly & the Family Stone segment sideswiped a lot of the greatest hits for deeper cuts — all the way back to his childhood gospel quartet and into albums from “A Whole New Thing” and “Life” to “Fresh,” along with a set of those who were influenced by him.
And it was Bloomsday, so there were songs about James Joyce, “Ulysses” and Molly.
