Capital Radio 10-7: Wartime October

The arrival of the 10th month brought 11 songs about October. Then there were birthdays to note for Thom Yorke of Radiohead, turning 56, to John Mellencamp, who is 73 today.

Our birthday salutes have rarely dug back so far, with three from the 19th century: banjoist Uncle Dave Macon, born this day in 1870; labor organizer Joe Hill (1879) and Charles Crozat Converse (1832), who put music to “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.”

It was also the birthday of Dino Valenti of Quicksilver Messenger Service, born this day in 1937, Judee Sill (1944), June Allyson (1917), Andy Devine (1905), and Vaughn Monroe (1911).

Most of the show, though, carried the weight of the war in the Middle East, one year after the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israel, with songs from Bob Dylan, Tom Waits and of course, Edwin Starr. On the opening day of the Supreme Court’s session here, some Supremes, dealing with their own “Love Child.”
