Capital Radio 2-10: Cupid and the Valentines

Ten songs about Cupid joined 20 more about Valentine’s Day in advance of this week’s observation. 

We began with seven songs featuring Gene Barge, saxophone ace who died this month at 98 and who seemed to invenbt the rock ’n’ roll sax interplay the E Street Band would later employ.

Bertolt Brecht’s birthday gave rise to a set of his songs with Kurt Weill. Candles were also blown out for Roberta Flack (88 today), as well as Chick Webb, Don Gibson of the Ventures, Jerry Goldsmith, Jimmy Durante and harmonica wrangler Larry Adler. 

An awful lot of artists today seemed to have a D.C. or Maryland connection, including Flack, Webb and Adler, but also Nils Lofgren and Snail Mail.
