The death of Ozzy Osbourne July 22 at 76 brought an abundance of unusual collaborations — from Ian Hunter and Elton John to Miss Piggy — as well as some of his high points from his singular solo career and that of Black Sabbath, emphasizing covers he recorded in 2005. (Here’s a thing I wrote about him for Substack).
Closed with the recent deaths of Cleo Laine and Tom Lahrer, who both died at 97, and Chuck Mangione who died last Wednesday at 84.
In between, it was all birthdays, of bluesmen Mike Bloomfield and Junior Kimbrough, Richard Wright of Pink Floyd, Phil Proctor of The Firesign Theatre, Rachel Sweet (63!), Simon Kirke (76) and Gerald Casale of Devo (77).
We also paused to note the birthday of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis on what would have been her 96th birthday with songs from Lana Del Rey to Rage Against the Machine.
