Capital Radio, 8-5: People Got to Be Free

The biggest prisoner exchange since the end of the Cold War, after six months of secret planning involving seven countries, resulted in last week’s release of 26 people, so we played almost as many songs about freedom and being released.

Capital Radio began with birthday salutes for Adam Yauch — MCA of The Beastie Boys — who would have turned 60 today; rocker Rick Derringer, turning 77; country’s Sammi Smith, born this day in 1943; punk rock utility man Pat Smear, turning 65; and Australian one hit wonder Samantha Sang, turning 73. 

The influential Joe Boyd, turning 82 today, was represented by several of records he produced, from the Incredible String Band, Pink Floyd and Fairport Convention to R.E.M. and Loudon Wainwright III.
