Capital Radio, 3-18: TikTok Raspberries

Our salute to Eric Carmen came with the rare one-two punch of “All By Myself” following the Rachmaninoff piano concerto that inspired it, topped by a pint of hits from his band, Raspberries. Also celebrated the work of Karl Wallinger of World Party, who also died this month, as well as works from the lesser known T.M. Stevens and Malcom Holcombe.

There were birthdays aplenty to mark — for Bill Frisell, turning 73 today; John Kander, 98 (!); Miki Berenyi of Lush, 57; James McMurtry, 62; Lykke Li, 38; Queen Latifah, 58 and Vanessa Williams, 61.

But also Wilson Pickett, born this day in 1941; Grant Hart, 1961; Charley Pride, 1934; Procol Harum drummer B.J. Wilson, 1947; Alan Parsons Project co-founder Eric Woodson, 1945; and “Flight of the Bumblebee” originator Nikolai Rimsy-Korsakov, born this day way back in 1844 — and the second Russian composer featured today.

Because we’re up on all the hot issues consuming Washington, D.C., there was a whole set about TikTok — though none of the selections, from Fats Domino to U2 are likely on that site’s music charts.

Here’s the setlist:
