Capital Radio, 3-25: Aretha, Elton and Johnny

Survived an equipment meltdown early in the show to bring a slew of birthday greetings, primarily for Aretha Franklin, born today in 1942; Elton John, turning 77 today, and early rock ’n’ roller Johnny Burnette, born in 1934.

But also celebrated is Bonnie Guitar, born this day in 1923, Hoyt Axton (1938), Pee Wee Harris (1933), Finley Quaye, turning 50; and Brinsley Schwarz, 77.

There was a segment saluting the wide-ranging work of producer Tom Wilson, born this day in 1931, whose work spanned Bob Dylan, Velvet Underground, The Animals, and Cecil Taylor, who was also born today in 1929.

And the birthday of novelist Flannery O’Connor, born this day in 1925, brought a group of songs either directly (Tom Waits, PJ Harvey, Bruce Springsteen, Sufjan Stevens, U2, Nick Cave) or indirectly (The Handsome Family, Jim White).

Closed with the hopeful strains of baseball’s impending Opening Day.
